CROM Basic

- Cervical Range of Motion Instrument

The CROM is the only instrument for which normal values have been established for cervical range of motion.

As a health care professional, you understand the importance of being able to correctly evaluate your patient’s cervical problems. When using a goniometer or stand-alone inclinometers it is nearly impossible to reposition the inclinometer to the very same place you took the original measurement. Every time your patient moves, you have to remeasure.

That is why Performance Attainment Associates has developed the CROM, which combines inclinometers and magnets in an easy to use instrument. It takes only minutes to make objective, repeatable measurements.

Use the CROM to measure:

  • Sub-occipital flexion and extension
  • Cervical flexion and extension
  • Lateral flexion
  • Cervical rotation

Advantages of using the CROM:

  • Positions easily and securely like a pair of sunglasses
  • Examiner’s hands remain free to guide patient’s movements
  • Inclinometers are preset to frame eliminating zeroing time and errors
  • Fluid damped inclinometers permit fast, accurate readings without waiting for oscillations to damp out
  • Positions to the nose and ears, eliminates the substantial error (10% or more) common in stand alone inclinometer placement
  • Secured to the head by hook and loop straps, eliminates tracking errors since it will not slip during movement
  • Magnetic reference eliminates shoulder and torso movements during rotation

The CROM Basic includes:

  • CROM mainframe, straps and nosepiece
  • Rotation arm
  • Magnetic reference
  • Standardized written protocol
  • Instructional DVD (VHS format upon request)

CROM Deluxe

- Cervical Range of Motion Instrument

The CROM Deluxe has all the features of the CROM Basic with the benefit of some added accessories to allow additional measurements such as protrusion, retraction, dorsal glide and rounded shoulders. If you already own the CROM Basic, you can purchase a CROM upgrade package to purchase only these additional accessories.

As with the CROM Basic, the CROM Deluxe measures sub-occipital flexion and extension, cervical flexion and extension, cervical rotation and lateral side bend. To learn more about the benefits of the CROM, read the CROM Basic description.

How the Forward Head Unit works:

  • The CROM Deluxe includes a head forward unit for postural measurements. As with all CROM measurements the patient is in the preferred upright position.
  • The head forward arm attaches to the CROM mainframe and the vertebra locator is held on C7.
  • When the vial on the vertebra locator is level, the reading on the head forward arm is the number of centimeters between the bridge of the patient’s nose and C7.
  • When the patient glides their head forward, the difference between the head forward measurement and resting measurement is protrusion. The patient slides their head back to get the retraction measurement.
  • The difference between the two measurements is dorsal glide (or head translation in the horizontal plane).
  • By using the nose bridge and the seventh cervical vertebra as landmarks, forward head measurements are repeatable.

The CROM Deluxe includes:

  • CROM mainframe with straps and nosepiece
  • Rotation arm
  • Magnetic Reference
  • Head Forward Arm
  • Vertebra Locator
  • Extra Nose piece
  • Standardized written protocol

CROM 3

- Cervical Range of Motion Instrument

The CROM has set the standard for cervical range of motion measurements. The CROM 3, the next generation of measurement instruments, utilizes a ball technology that makes the CROM 3 easier to read and easier to use.

The CROM 3, like the CROM, is located to anatomical landmarks with inclinometers zeroed to the instrument frame, thus eliminating initial head position and location errors. Securing the frame to the head with straps eliminates tracking errors since the inclinometers will not slip in reference to the head during measurements.

A compass is used for rotation measurements, allowing measurements to be made in the preferred upright position. As the head rotates the compass indicates the angle of rotation in reference to the shoulders, allowing fast, accurate readings.

Benefits of the CROM 3:

  • The CROM 3 has three-inch dials which makes measurements readable to one degree.
  • The ball indicator on the CROM 3 inclinometers reduces sensitivity to vertical orientation
  • Improved location of the Sagittal meter
  • The rotation arm on the CROM 3 is attached to the side of the CROM (instead of the front) making the CROM more comfortable for the patient.
  • The arm on the CROM 3 is one inch lower than the original CROM which makes measurements easier for the examiner to read.
  • A specially adapted Forward Head unit is available for the CROM 3. As with the original, the CROM 3 Head Forward unit measures the head position relative to the seventh vertebra.

Use the CROM 3 to measure:

  • Sub-occipital flexion and extension
  • Cervical Flexion and extension
  • Rotation and Lateral side bend
  • Rounded Shoulders

Optional Forward Head Unit for protrusion, retraction and dorsal glide measurements.

The CROM 3 includes:

  • CROM mainframe with 3 inch dials, straps and nose piece
  • Rotation arm
  • Magnetic Reference
  • Tape Measure for Rounded Shoulders

Deluxe Inclinometer

The Deluxe Inclinometer utilizes a ball technology that reduces the inclinometer’s sensitivity to vertical positioning. The Deluxe Inclinometer has a three inch dial that provides readings to one degree. The inclinometer is fluid dampened to permit fast, accurate readings without waiting for oscillations to damp out. A short base is provided for the spine and small surfaces like the hand.

A long base works well for placement on long flat surfaces such as the arm (when measuring elbow range of motion) or the leg (when measuring knee range of motion). The long arm is also easy to grasp for measurements such as wrist rotation and shoulder rotation.

When measuring the extremities, one inclinometer is sufficient. When measuring the spine, the preferred method is the two inclinometer method (dual inclinometry).

Using the Deluxe Inclinometer to measure the spine:

  • The examiner palpates two points on the spine. Example: for lumbar flexion, S1 and T12.
  • The patient is instructed to stand erect. The inclinometers are placed (centered) on the two palpation points and zeroed.
  • The patient is instructed to slowly bend forward to end range. The reading on each inlcinometer is recorded.
  • The top inclinometer measures TOTAL flexion, the bottom inclinometer measures SACRAL flexion. Total flexion minus scaral flexion is TRUE flexion.
  • True flexion is the measurement usually needed.

Benefits of the Deluxe Inclinometer:

  • Ball indicator reduces sensitivity to vertical orientation
  • Three inch dial is readable to one degree
  • Retains all features of the Universal Inclinometer
  • Rubber footed base grips curved surfaces
  • Long arm base can be used for extremity measurements
  • Long arm base can be easily gripped for wrtist rotation measurements

Universal Inclinometer

The Universal Inclinometer replaces the goniometer for quick and easy measurements. The inclinometer is fluid dampened to permit fast, accurate readings without waiting for oscillations to damp out. The inclinometer is easily adjusted to zero at the initial position so the final reading is the range of motion. A short base is provided for measuring curved surfaces like the spine.

A long base works well for placement on long flat surfaces such as the arm (when measuring elbow range of motion) or the leg (when measuring knee range of motion). The long arm is also easy to grasp for measurements such as wrist rotation and shoulder rotation.

When measuring the extremities one inclinometer is sufficient. When measuring the spine the two inclinometer method (dual inclinometry) is preferred.

Using the Universal Inclinometer to measure the spine:

  • The examiner palpates two points on the spine. Example: for lumbar flexion, S1 and T12.
  • The patient is instructed to stand erect. The inclinometers are placed (centered) on the two palpation points and zeroed.
  • The patient is instructed to slowly bend forward to end range. The reading on each inlcinometer is recorded.
  • The top inclinometer measures TOTAL flexion, the bottom inclinometer measures SACRAL flexion. Total flexion minus scaral flexion is TRUE flexion.
  • True flexion is the measurement usually needed.

BROM Basic

- Back Range of Motion Instrument

The BROM Basic is the ideal instrument for any practitioner that needs accurate lumbar and thoracic measurements. The BROM Basic features the inclionometer based BROM R/L (Rotation/Lateral flexion) unit. The meter unit has an inclinometer for Lateral Flexion measurements and a magnetic inclinometer (compass) for rotation measurements. The BROM Basic also includes two Universal Inclinometers for measuring lumbar and thoracic Flexion and Extension.

How the BROM measures Rotation and Lateral Flexion:

The compass on the BROM R/L unit measures to the magnetic reference placed on a selected spine location, thus eliminating unwanted movement below that point. An added advantage of this method is that measurements are made with the trunk in the vertical position. The BROM R/L unit is designed so when the examiner grasps the rib cage the unit becomes an integral part of the patient, thus eliminating tracking errors.

How the BROM Basic measures Flexion and Extension:

The BROM Basic includes two Universal Inclinometers for measuring Flexion and Extension of the spine, as well as range of motion of the extremities. The Universal Inclinometers are fluid damped to permit fast, accurate readings without waiting for oscillations to damp out. The Universal Inclinometer has two unique bases. The rubber-footed base is ideally suited for measuring curved surfaces, such as the spine, without slipping. The examiner places an inclinometer on the lower and upper measuring point (i.e. S1 and T12 for lumbar flexion) and zeros the meters. The readings on the meters are read and recorded when the patient has reached end range. The difference between the two readings is true flexion.

The BROM Basic measures:

  • Lumbar and Thoracic Flexion and Extension
  • Lumbar and Thoracic Lateral Flexion
  • Lumbar and Thoracic Rotation
  • Range of Motion of the extremities

The BROM Basic includes:

  • BROM R/L unit
  • Magnetic reference and belt
  • 2 Universal Inclinometers
  • 2 Inclinometer arms
  • Standardized written protocol
  • Sturdy die cast carrying case
  • Full one year warranty

BROM II

- Back Range of Motion Instrument

The BROM takes only minutes to make objective and repeatable measurements. The Rotation/Lateral Unit is designed so the examiner holds the rib cage for positive tracking of rotation and lateral flexion movements. The inclonometers are fluid damped to permit fast, accurate readings without waiting for oscillations to damp out.

Lumbar Flexion/Extension

The BROM II measures the true spine segment flexion between two points. Dual inclinometers measure the spine tangent flexion at the upper measuring point.

The BROM has set the standard for measuring lumbar and thoracic flexion/extension, lateral flexion and rotation range of motion measurements. The Flexion/Extension Unit is easily positioned on the sacrum, eliminating errors due to hip movements during measurements. The unit is secured to the body by hook and loop straps, freeing an examiner's hand for guiding the patient during measurements

Lumber Lateral Flexion

The BROM uses a magnetic meter for rotation measurements that measures to a reference placed on the sacrum, allowing measurements to be made with the trunk in the preferred vertical position. An added advantage of this method is that unwanted hip movement is eliminated.

The BROM II includes:

  • BROM R/L (Rotation/Lateral Flexion) unit
  • Magnetic reference and belt
  • BROM F/E (Flexion/Extension) unit
  • Long measuring arm (for the thoracic)
  • Short measuring arm (for the lumbar)
  • Standardized written protocol
  • Instructional DVD (VHS format available)

PALM

- PALpation Meter

The Objective Way to Perform Skeletal Alignment Evaluations

The PALM combines the ease and proprioceptive advantages of palpation with the objectivity and reliability of caliper and inclinometer measurements.

  • The caliper determines the distance in centimeters between the two palpating fingers.
  • The inclinometer determines the inclination in degrees between the two palpating fingers.

A unique slide rule calculator gives you the height discrepancy between the two landmarks palpated in both centimeters and inches.

A Typical Use

Differentiating between a Functional and a Structural Short Leg.

The PALM will help you differentiate what part of the leg length inequality is structural and what part is functional.

  • Measurement of the iliac crest heights in the standing position determines if there is a relative height difference.
  • Measurement of the iliac crest's relative heights in the seated position removes height discrepancies due to lower extremity asymmetrics.

Other Uses

Determining height discrepancies at landmarks.

The PALM allows you to determine skeletal asymmetry and then locate the point of asymmetry by making measurements at various landmarks like:

  • Medial Malleoli
  • Fibular Heads
  • AC Joints
  • Mastoid Processes
  • Gluteal Folds

The PALM Caliper can also determine chest cavity expansion and absolute bone length.

Features

One of three types of palpation tips can be selected depending on the shape and location of landmarks.

  • Pointed tips for palpation of visual landmarks or marks applied to the skin.
  • L tips for palpation of bony ledges.
  • O tips for palpation of landmarks directly with finger tips.

The PALM is easy to use because the large caliper dial makes length measurements easy and the fluid damped inclinometer allows quick and accurate angle measurements.
